When it comes to excellence in providing care for older adults, Tabor Village sets the gold standard.

A long-standing care facility in the Abbotsford community, Tabor Village is home to nearly 300 individuals with diverse living situations, ranging from independent to complex care. Every day staff serve and support residents with heartfelt compassion, which has earned Tabor Village “Exemplary Standing,” the highest possible ranking by Accreditation Canada, a national leading independent surveyor of health-care organizations.

“When people choose us, it is because they know Tabor Village is a great place to live,” says Andrea Critchley, Capital Campaign Manager at Tabor Village. “They hear about the innovative things we’re doing to with our recreation, progressive care models and intergenerational volunteer programs and see how we to give high value to our residents. At Tabor Village, the lives and experiences of the residents are celebrated and we are all a family.”

Tabor Village opened its doors in 1959, when members from local Mennonite Brethren Churches in British Columbia first came together as the Tabor Home Society to serve and care for 39 residents. Since that time, numerous renovations to their original facility and the addition of a 38-unit apartment building for independent living has dramatically expanded their capacity. The Village also expanded with 104 rooms of assisted living at Tabor Court in 1996 and addition of 26 beds at Valhaven in 2015.

What hasn’t changed is their commitment to advancing the care they provide.

“Innovation is part of our vision at Tabor,” says Andrea. “We’re always looking for new ways to enhance the many ways we care for our residents, to keep our residents engaged and living life to the fullest. Tabor truly does live out our mission, ‘Care from the Heart.’”

Getting involved with, and building capacity in their local community is another important aspect of their work. Volunteer reading and mentorship programs connect young people with residents—a win/win for both. Tabor Village also provides practicum placements and other opportunities for new graduates across all areas of the organization—opportunities that often lead to jobs.

As a credit union with a shared focus on innovation, that also actively supports the local community, it’s no wonder that Tabor Village turned to Envision Financial, a division of First West Credit Union for their business banking needs.

“Envision Financial is a community-based, supportive organization that’s driven by real people who also care about and are involved with their community,” says Andrea. “When we are working hard to support our community, we want to partner with other organizations that have the same vision. That’s really important to us.”

Today Tabor Village is at an important stage in its journey; they’re in the midst of a major, multi-year project to replace the aging complex care facility with an innovative new Campus of Care. Shifting to a household model—a new design approach where residences are grouped together in small communities as opposed to sprawling hallways—Tabor Village is continuing to innovate and provide quality seniors care, and we’re excited to be with them on their journey.
